
Drive through any older Massachusetts neighborhood and you can read the history of retaining wall construction in the walls themselves: the ones still dead straight after fifty years, and the ones leaning out over the sidewalk with a bulge in the middle and a gap at the top.
The difference is almost never the material. It is water.
Why walls actually fail
A retaining wall holds back soil. Saturated soil is far heavier than dry soil, and it pushes far harder — that pressure is called hydrostatic pressure, and it is what moves walls.
A wall built with clean drainage stone behind it, filter fabric where the soil would otherwise clog that stone, and somewhere for the water to go, never lets the pressure build in the first place. A wall backfilled straight against native soil holds water every wet spring, and moves a little further each year until someone has to rebuild it.
Everything else — the block you chose, the stone you chose, the cap detail — is a finish decision. Drainage is a structural one.
Segmental block: engineered, uniform, predictable
Manufactured segmental retaining wall block is the workhorse of modern hardscape. The units are consistent, they lock together with a built-in setback that leans the wall into the hill, and manufacturers publish engineering for them — which matters once a wall gets tall enough to need a designed solution.
- Good for: taller walls, terracing, walls carrying a load above them such as a driveway.
- Look: uniform and contemporary; a wide range of colors and face textures.
- Cost driver: excavation, base and backfill — not the block itself.
Natural stone: it belongs here
New England has been building stone walls since the colonial period, largely because clearing fields produced an endless supply of them. A natural stone wall reads as native in a way that manufactured block does not, and next to an antique colonial or a shingle-style house it usually looks right where block would look imported.
- Good for: garden walls, lower terraces, restoring what was already there, properties where character matters more than uniformity.
- Look: irregular, weathered, and better every decade.
- Cost driver: labor — fitting stone is slower and more skilled work than setting block.
The parts nobody sees
Whichever material you choose, the same things determine whether the wall stands.
- Excavation to below the depth frost affects, and a compacted subgrade.
- A compacted base of crushed stone, and a first course set dead level — every error there is multiplied by every course above it.
- Clean drainage stone behind the wall, with filter fabric where fine soil would otherwise migrate into it.
- An outlet: a drain or a daylight point so water actually leaves rather than sitting.
- Compacted backfill in lifts, and grading above the wall that sends surface water away from it.
When a wall is the right answer at all
Sometimes it is not. A gentle slope may just need re-grading, a swale, or a planted bank that never has to be mowed. A wall earns its cost when it converts unusable ground into usable ground — a level lawn, a patio, a wider driveway — or when it stops something from moving that has already started to move.
That is the conversation worth having on site, before anyone starts pricing block.
